Sweden's Nordic Satellite AB launches new digital satellite base station in Riga [26 Mar 2002]

Skyport, a new digital television and radio satellite base station of Sweden's Nordic Satellite AB (NSAB) company, has set into motion in Riga, the company reported. The new base station, capable of receiving and transmitting of up to 30 TV and radio channels, has been installed in Latvian television building in Zakusala island in Riga. It will enable any Baltic TV company to broadcast its programs via satellite outside the region and, the programs will be received in entire Europe.

NSAB which is managing Sirius satellite system invested more than 2 million US dollars into the project implementation. The new base station is connected with Sirius satellite system. While launching the Skyport project the aim of NSAB was to set up a powerful centre for transmission of both local and foreign television and radio channels using digital technologies. The project implementation took nine months. At this point NSAB is ready to provide transmission services 24 hours a day.

People in the Baltic States and neighbouring countries will be able to use NSAB services using portable size satellite dish and digital TV receiver. Apart from digital TV and radio services the satellite base station also is able to provide new Internet and broadband services.

NSAB is the owner of Sirius satellite system made up of three satellites which is the largest in Northern and Eastern European regions. NSAB is owned by Swedish Space Corporation and Luxembourg company SES Global.
