At present Latvia has established diplomatic relations with 156 countries.
[*] The numbers of states or state formations, with which Latvia has had diplomatic relations, but at the moment those countries have either ceased to exist, have broken up or have no legal successors, have been marked (and not included in the total amount).
[1] In the period from 1921 to 1928, the date of recognition of the State of Latvia signifies also the date of establishment of the diplomatic relations.
[2] On August 27, 1991 Belgium adhered to the Declaration of the European Community on the independence of the Baltic States. The Kingdom of Belgium in the press announcement on recognition of the Baltic States of August 23, 1991 has declared that taking into account legal continuity of the Baltic States, Belgium has no need to reconsider the issue of recognition of the Baltic States. Subsequently, the diplomatic relations can be renewed at the earliest time.
[3] On August 27, 1991 Denmark adhered to the Declaration of the European Community on the independence of the Baltic States. The Joint Copenhagen Protocol on Co-operation between the Kingdom of Denmark and the Republic of Latvia of March 18, 1991 reaffirms the recognition of the statehood of Latvia as declared on February 7, 1921, and announces that Denmark and Latvia would seek opportunities for a favourable situation in order to renew diplomatic relations.
