Latvia welcomes the decision taken by the Canadian government to grant visa-free status to Poland, Lithuania, Hungary and Slovakia. Latvia considers this to be a substantial achievement for the whole of the European Union.
"Midsummer Madness" at the Baltic Film Festival in Ottawa [28 Feb 2008]
On March 1st film lovers will have the opportunity to see the film "Jāņu nakts" (Midsummer Madness), an Austrian, British and Latvian film studio joint production. This is an ironic comedy about the adventures of foreigners in Latvia on the shortest night of the year – Midsummer's Eve.
Latvian film Vogelfrei to be screened in Canada [29 Nov 2007]
On 29 November in Ottawa, the European Union Film Festival will showcase the Latvian feature film Vogelfrei, but on 3 December the joint production by young Latvian directors will be offered to Vancouver cinema connoisseurs with support from Cedric Steel, Honorary Consul of Latvia in British Columbia.

On 31 August, the marketing specialists of Buxtehude City in Germany together with the singer Nina Zober will host the European Music Visits Buxtehude music festival, which will include participation of the Latgallian folklore group Ilza and the music group called Talisman, which includes performers of Ukrainian, Moldovan and Belarusian heritage.
Latvian Ambassador to Canada takes part in 50th anniversary celebrations for Tervete [31 Aug 2007]
On Friday 31 August, Margers Krams, the Latvian Ambasador to Canada will host Edvins Upitis, Chairman of the Tervete District Council, as well as Arturs Reiniks and Oskars Andrusans, musicians of the Tervete group, who have travelled to Canada to participate in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Latvian district's namesake Tervete, the property of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montreal. The guests will be accompanied by Dags Demants, Chair of Council for the congregation.

When presenting credentials to the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Moldova and Ukraine Atis Sjanitis the President stressed that Latvia is interested in promoting the economic co-operation with Ukraine and indicated that although during recent years the economic co-operation has become more active all potential has not yet been exhausted.

On 9 June 2007, the Latvian-Estonian joint production of the animated film Lote from the Village of Inventors will be presented at the European Film Festival in Toronto. The film has already received public acclaim in North America.

From 15 to 18 March 2007, Ottawa will be the location for the seventh Baltic Film Festival in Canada. This year Latvia will present the Latvian-Estonian joint production of the full-length animated film Lote from the Village of Inventors.

On 24 January 2007, the Latvian Embassy in London will host a special event dedicated to the anniversary of the international de iure recognition of Latvia. Latvia welcomes Canada's decision to lift visa regime with Estonia [29 Sep 2006]
In connection with the statement of September 27 by the Canadian Department of Citizenship and Immigration on the introduction of a visa-free regime with Estonia, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers Canada's decision to be a result of the joint efforts of all seven new EU member states (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland).

On the 9th Saeima elections procedure abroad [06 Sep 2006]
On 7 October 2006, the 9th Saeima (Latvian parliament) elections will be held. Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in conjunction with the Central Election Commission has created 53 polling stations abroad. In 38 of the polling stations it will be possible to file applications for voting by post and also to vote in person, and 15 polling stations will be open on the election day itself from 7 am to 10 pm local time.
Minister Pabriks requests Canada to introduce visa-free regime with Latvia [19 Jul 2006]
On 19 July 2006, Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks, in his meeting with Peter Van Loan, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Canadian Foreign Minister, emphasized Latvia's interest in introducing a visa-free regime for travel to Canada as soon as possible.

On 3 July 2006, Latvian Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks met with the Ambassador of Canada, Claire Poulin, to discuss the visa issue between Latvia and Canada. During the meeting, Ambassador Poulin indicated Latvia's significant progress during last two years, with the number of visa refusals constituting only 3 per cent in the first quarter of 2006.

Trade opportunities in the Baltic states for Canadian businessmen [25 Apr 2006]
On 26 April 2006, the Baltic Business Seminar will be held in Halifax, the capital of Canada's province Nova Scotia. The goal of the seminar is to present information about business and investment opportunities in the Baltic states, and to promote the bilateral commercial cooperation. The Latvian Ambassador to Canada, Atis Sjanits, will speak about trade opportunities, and the business and investment environment in Latvia. Institute of Baltic, Finnish and German Studies officially opens in Stockholm University [06 Apr 2006]
On 6 April 2006, Latvian Ambassador to Sweden Elita Kuzma participated in the official opening ceremony of the Institute for Baltic, Finnish and German Studies at Stockholm University. The institute was founded by merging the Institute for Baltic Studies, the Finnish Institute and German Institutes.
