Appeal by Embassy in Japan to Latvian nationals staying in Japan

16 Mar 2011

The Embassy of Latvia in Japan reports that due to the 11 March earthquake in North East Japan and the following tsunami, the Fukushima I NPP in Fukushima Prefecture has considerable problems with several of its nuclear reactor units. Due to increased radiation levels and public health concerns, the Japanese government has ordered the evacuation within a distance of 30 km from the NPP, and urges everybody to leave the area.

The Embassy of Latvia calls on Latvian nationals currently staying in Japan to consider, on individual basis, the necessity of remaining in the country. We call on them to pay increased attention to the TV, radio and other media reports and, in case of urgency, follow the instructions of relevant local authorities.

The situation in Tokyo is currently stable and no radiation levels have been reported that might present health hazards. The Embassy of Latvia continues working in emergency regime. During office hours, the Embassy is accessible by telephone 03-3467-6888; outside office hours, the Embassy staff can be contacted by the consular phone 080-3449-0093. E-mail: embassy.japan@mfa.gov.lv

We also urge the Latvian nationals who have not yet notified the Embassy about their stay in Japan to do that via the above-specified e-mail address or by calling the round-the-clock telephone 29287398 of the Consular Department.
