Due to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly spring session held in Riga, border control on the borders of the Republic of Latvia will be temporarily re-introduced from 24 May until 1 June 2010. The border control will be carried out as before joining the Schengen Convention in 2007. When crossing the border, it is necessary to be in possession of a valid travel document, as it is required also now according to the provisions for travelling in Schengen area.

Temporary border control means the control of the travel documents for the persons crossing the Latvian state border. Carrying along a travel document or passport is required now as well, but from 24 May until 1 June, the control of the documents will be carried out. For the citizens of the European Union, when crossing the Schengen internal border, it is sufficient to present an ID-card. The Latvian side would also like to kindly remind the travellers to Latvia to check the expiry date of their travel documents beforehand in order to avoid any possible hindrances for crossing the border.

Temporary border control is re-introduced in Latvia for the first time after joining Schengen on 21 December 2007. The State Border Guard would highly appreciate the understanding of the persons crossing the border regarding the above mentioned temporary changes, taking place due to the high-level event held in Latvia.

The temporary border control will be established at 9:00 (9:00 AM) on 24 May and finished at 18:00 (6:00 PM) on 1 June. The border control will be conducted at 10 temporary land border points, the Port of Riga and Riga International Airport.
