From 14 to 18 June, the Ministry of Foreign affairs in association with the State Police College is carrying out a development co-operation project with Afghanistan in the field of strengthening the rule of law.
Arriving to Riga on a training visit are four leading police officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of Faryab Province in Afghanistan and an investigation prosecutor, in order to undertake a course of lectures and practical workshops in criminal investigation, as well as to gain an insight into the daily work of their Latvian colleagues. As part of the visit, the Afghan officers are to meet with Chief of the State Police of Latvia, Valdis Voins. The project is implemented with the funding of 10,000 LVL allocated by the Cabinet of Ministers for Latvia's civil engagement and development co-operation projects in Afghanistan. Latvia supports a comprehensive and balanced approach to renewal and development of Afghanistan, where beside military efforts an ever increasing role is played by civil engagement and development co-operation. Since 2007, Latvia has been realising development co-operation projects in Afghanistan in the fields such as strengthening the rule of law, the promotion of social and economic integration of women, and the improvement of the water supply system. Having evaluated the successful co-operation projects of the previous years and being aware of Afghanistan's role in safeguarding security and stability in the region, Latvia is planning to continue with development co-operation projects in priority areas, thus emphasising the significance of civil dimension for stabilising Afghanistan. As reported earlier, Latvia has been an active participant in the international military operation in Afghanistan where currently 175 Latvian soldiers are on a mission. | |||||
