Latvian and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs announce contest for Latvian and Estonian literature translators [29 Jan 2010]

On 28th January, laying the foundations of a tradition to present an annual award of Latvian and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs to Latvian and Estonian language translators, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Māris Riekstiņš and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia Urmas Paet signed the Regulation on Translators' Award.

In March 2010 the Award will be presented for the best translation of the year 2009. The Ministries accept nomination applications from 29th January  to 19th February.

The Award was established during the official visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia Urmas Paet to Latvia on 18th February 2009, when the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of both countries signed a Joint Communiqué, emphasising the significance of knowledge of Latvian and Estonian languages, the role of the languages in our national identity and statehood, as well as within the national community.

The aim of the Award is to facilitate professionalism and activity of Latvian-Estonian and Estonian-Latvian text translators in translating fiction as well as political, popular science, historical, sociological and other texts.

The monetary value of the award is 3 000 euros (2100 lats) and the Award fund consists of equal contributions by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia.
