Ilze Juhansone to take part at informal meeting of EU ministers for develoment

On 17-18 February in Lagranha, Spain, the European Union development ministers convene for an informal meting at which Latvia is represented by Ilze Juhansone, Head of the European Union Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia. Taking part at the meeting and presenting his programme will be the new EU Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs.

During the meeting, the EU Member States will Exchange opinions on the EU contribution to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in preparation for this year's UN MDG Review conference to be held in September, in New York.

The ministers are also invited to discuss the effectiveness of the EU response and the division of responsibilities among donors, the current situation in Haiti and the forthcoming EU engagement in the reconstruction phase of the country as well as tax management issues in the developing countries, and innovative funding mechanisms. A discussion is expected on the EU-U.S. co-operation in the field of development policy.
