On 12 February, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and the ministry staff will meet with 23 directors of Latvia's regional libraries hosting the European Union Information Points (EUIP). During the meeting, the participants will discuss further co-operation and will be introduced to current issues on the EU agenda.

The event will bring together directors from libraries in Alūksne, Liepaja, Staicele, Ludza, Ventspils, Riga and other towns and cities in Latvia. The directors will be presented with the Foreign Ministry plans in the field of EU communication and exchange opinions on further functioning of the EUIPs. The visitors will also be taken on a tour through the Foreign Ministry building.

As the second part of the programme, the directors are to visit the EU House and see the recently opened facilities for receiving information, holding discussions and displaying art, as well as to meet with personnel of the European Parliament Information Office and the European Commission Representation in Latvia. In the conclusion of their programme, the library directors will visit the European Union information library located on the 2nd floor of the European House. The Foreign Ministry is in charge of the library, beginning this year.

As of 1 January 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken over from the State Chancellery the co-ordinator's function in disseminating the information about the European Union, including the co-ordination of 32 EU Information Points all over Latvia.
