Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins congratulates Lithuania's new Foreign Minister on assuming office [11 Feb 2010]

On 11 February, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins in a telephone conversation congratulated Lithuania's new Minister for Foreign Affairs, Audronius Azubalis on assuming office. During the conversation, Minister Riekstins emphasised close co-operation between Latvia and Lithuania, the active political and economic dialogue both on bilateral basis and as part of regional co-operation, as well as within international organisations.

In a letter, sent to Minister Azubalis, the Latvian Foreign Minister underscored that common efforts by both countries is an additional advantage when facing the economic and international policy challenges of today.

With the aim of exchanging opinions on issues of importance for both countries, Minister Riekstins invited the new Lithuanian Foreign Minister to arrive on a visit to Latvia in the nearest future, and Mr Azubalis accepted the invitation.

Prior to starting his tenure as Foreign Minister, Mr Audronis Azubalis was a journalist and for three terms - a deputy of the Seimas, during which time he was Head of the Lithuanian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Mr Azubalis has also been Deputy Chairman and, since 2008, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas. Lithuania's new Foreign Minister is a member of the Homeland Union - Lithuanian Christian Democrats Party.
