In view of Iran's non-cooperation, turning down the proposal by the International Atomic Energy Agency to exchange uranium for nuclear fuel, as well as the official statement of 8 February 2010 which declares Iran's intent to begin enriching uranium up to 20 percent level, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports imposing stronger sanctions within the framework of the UN Security Council. Iran's actions leave an impression of unwillingness to engage in a dialogue and to build trust, therefore the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to express hope that the UN Security Council, having objectively evaluated the current situation will agree in the nearest future on the course of action for imposing new sanctions on Iran. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds, that the international community is still open for co-operation with Iran regarding the use of nuclear energy for civilian purposes. At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to express its concern over the human rights situation in Iran, and condemns the violent suppression of protests of opposition supporters, and repressions against representatives of opposition, as well as invites the Iranian authorities to restore and respect the freedom of speech.
