Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins and Slovenian Foreign Minister to sign intergovernmental Agreement on exchange and mutual protection of classified information [09 Feb 2010]

On 10 February, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins will meet the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, Samuel Zbogar who is on a visit in Riga.

During the meeting, the ministers intend to discuss bilateral relations between Latvia and Slovenia, the EU topicalities, covering also institutional issues in the context of the Treaty of Lisbon, the energy policy, and NATO agenda, including the situation in Afghanistan. The ministers are also to review the topics related to the Eastern Partnership and the situation in the Western Balkans. 

As part of the visit, Foreign Ministers Riekstins and Zbogar will sign the Agreement between the Governments of Latvia and Slovenia on the exchange and mutual protection of classified information. The Agreement will lay down the measures for protecting classified information shared by the two countries, as well as specify competent security institutions in charge of security and protection of classified information.

Latvia and Slovenia sustain an active political dialogue both on a bilateral basis and within multilateral formats. Earlier in February, the Speaker of the Saeima Gundars Daudze made a visit to Slovenia.

The Government of Latvia recognised Slovenia's independence on 29 August 1991. On the same date, Slovenia recognised the independence of Latvia. Diplomatic relations were established on 30 September 1991.
