Joint Latvia-Russia Demarcation Commission to hold its first session

On 23 September, the first session of the Joint Latvia-Russia Demarcation Commission (the Commission) will be held in Daugavpils. The Commission was set up in accordance with Article 5 of the Treaty between the Republic of Latvia and the Russian Federation on the State Border of Latvia and Russia, providing that the Parties to the Treaty shall form a Joint Demarcation Commission, based on the parity principle. The task of the Commission is to mark the Latvia-Russia border on the ground.

During the first meeting it is expected to discuss the procedures of the Commission operations, the draft Statute of the Commission, as well as other topics.

On 22 September, the Cabinet of Ministers will consider the draft Decree On the appointment of representatives to the Joint Latvia-Russia Demarcation commission. In accordance with the said draft, the Foreign Ministry Ambassador at Large, Ints Upmacis, is to be appointed Co-chairman on the Latvian side of the commission. The Co-chairman on the Russian side is Ambassador at Large, Alexei Obukhov.

The Treaty between the Republic of Latvia and the Russian Federation on the State Border of Latvia and Russia was signed on 27 March 2007 in Moscow and entered into force on 18 December 2007, by Parties exchanging ratification documents.
