Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins presents Certificate of Appreciation to Honorary Consul General of Latvia in Istanbul

On 16 October, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins presented the Foreign Ministry Certificate of Appreciation to Honorary Consul General of Latvia in Istanbul, Ahmet Arbatlı, for his significant contribution to the representation of Latvia's interests and for the facilitation of economic and cultural co-operation between Latvia and Turkey.

"Ahmet Arbatli has provided a noteworthy contribution to shaping the relations between Latvia and Turkey and to the enhancement of co-operation between both countries in various fields. The Honorary Consul General in Istanbul has rendered support and assistance to Latvian citizens in resolving complicated consular issues," Minister Riekstins noted.

During the meeting, both parties discussed the economic situation in Latvia and Turkey, as well as the topicalities of the current consular relations.

Mr Arbatli has also contributed to the establishment of the Embassy of Latvia in Turkey and to the organisation of the Latvian President's visit to Turkey in 2005; he has actively participated in the organisation of the Latvian officials' visits and of cultural events in Ankara and Istanbul.  

In 1998, Ahmet Arbatli took up the position of Honorary Consul of Latvia in Istanbul. In 2005, due to his successful activities, Mr Arbatli was appointed Honorary Consul General of Latvia in Istanbul.
