Today at the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State Andris Teikmanis met with Antony Stokes, the Charge d' Affaires of the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Latvia, to indicate that the Republic of Latvia deems unacceptable the misleading statements by British politicians, which have been published in the international press, on a member of the coalition of Latvia's government and the tragic events of World War II. Latvia's Ambassador in London Eduards Stiprais has also addressed this issue today at a meeting with representatives of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom. Diplomats of the United Kingdom received information on soldiers who in the territory of Latvia during World War II were recruited by force, and it was repeatedly stressed that Latvia has always condemned the crimes committed during World War II. Minister for Foreign Affairs Maris Riekstins expresses regret that debates between the parties of the United Kingdom have gone beyond not only the borders of the United Kingdom, but also have come into conflict with international judgements, including those delivered by the 1946 Nurnberg Tribunal and the 1950 U.S. Displaced Persons Commission.
