Latvian EU Mission in Brussels receives newly renovated building for use

15 Jan 2008

On 15 January, the Latvian Mission to the EU received its new building in Brussels, Belgium.

The signing of the handover documents was attended by Normunds Popens, head of the Latvian Mission to the EU, Ingrida Levrence, Foreign Ministry Under-Secretary of State, the architect of the project Uldis Balodis, Helena Endriksone, Deputy Director of the State Construction Inspection, and a representative of the construction company – Ivars Millers, Vice-president of Skonto buve.

At the occasion, Ms Endriksone stated that the construction works were of high quality, and that all parties involved in the project had been co-operating successfully. Reconstruction was begun on 19 March last year.

The Latvian Mission to the EU will begin work in its new building at 23 Avenue des Arts on 25 January.

The building contains spacious representation rooms suitable for hosting receptions and other events. It is situated in a part of Brussels, which is commonly referred to as 'the European quarter', where the headquarters of the EU are situated.

The plan of the Foreign Ministry to purchase a building for the Mission received the backing of the government in the end of September 2005. Previously the Latvian Mission to the EU was housed in a building, where there were other tenants and which did not meet safety requirements. In addition there was not enough room for the staff of the Mission.
