On 10 October Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins took part in a foreign policy expert discussion, held by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), on relations between Russia and the West and their prospects. The debate was led by Julianne Smith, the Director of the CSIS Europe Program.
At the round-table discussion of experts, the participants shared their views on the impact of the Russian Federation-Georgia conflict on the relations between the West and Russia, as well as the balance of power and influence in the Russian Federation after President Dmitriy Medvedev took up office and in the light of the recent developments in foreign policy. The participants stressed the importance of the dialogue between the transatlantic community and Russia, at the same time drawing attention to the observance of the general international order and basic principles of mutual co-operation.
The discussion participants agreed that a joint and clearly defined stand of the EU and NATO member states plays a crucial role in the relations with Russia, also with regard to energy policy.
Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins drew attention to the fact that the international community must continue to provide support to the eastern neighbouring states of the EU and NATO, including Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, as well as to Belarus for its democratic development. "The Euro-Atlantic perspective can be an excellent motivation factor for the adoption of reforms and implementation of democratic efforts in these states," stated Minister Riekstins explaining the experience of the Baltic states.
The CSIS, which was founded in 1962, conducts analysis and research into the developments in international politics, produces new policy initiatives and gives policy planning advice to U.S. government institutions, international organisations, the private sector, and the civic society.
