On 30 September, the call for applications was closed for the grant project competition Support for Development Co-operation Projects in the Recipient Countries as Defined by the Republic of Latvia announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As the rules of the competition envisaged the possibility of sending applications by post, the last applications were received at the Foreign Ministry on 2 October.
In total, 20 project applications were received, requesting a sum of LVL 313,293.79 for their implementation from the Foreign Ministry Development co-operation budget. The figure more three times exceeded the funding allocated for the competition.
The total amount of funding available under this grant project competition is LVL 100,000. The budget estimate for one project had to be from LVL 5000 to LVL 20,000.
An independent expert commission has until 24 October to assess the projects. Information on the successful applicants will be published on the Foreign Ministry website.
The implementation period for the projects is from 10 November this year to 1 March 2009. Implementation of the project may take a shorter time period, but not before or after the specified dates.
The grant project competition will provide a good opportunity for Latvia's non-governmental organisations to develop co-operation with their partners in beneficiary countries, sharing their experience and knowledge gained in the development and reform process in Latvia.
