On 24 July in Riga, the second political consultations will take place between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation of the Kingdom of Morocco. On the part of Latvia, the consultations will be chaired by Normans Penke, the Foreign Ministry Secretary of State. The Moroccan delegation will be headed by Latifa Akharbach, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation.

During the talks the parties will review bilateral relations between both countries, as well as topical issues on the regional and global scale. As part of the visit, it is planned to sign the Convention for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income. A meeting has been scheduled for the Moroccan delegation, with Vaira Paegle, Chair of the Saeima European Affairs Committee.

Previous political consultations between Foreign Ministries of Latvia and Morocco took place on 8 March last year.

Co-operation between Latvia and Morocco within the framework of the "Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean" can be regarded as the factor complementing the spectrum of bilateral relations. The Kingdom of Morocco is an active member of this format, at the same time working on the expansion of its relations with the European Union on a long term basis. The "Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean" was launched by the Paris Summit for the Mediterranean on 13 July this year. Latvia was represented at the event by the President and by the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Morocco recognised the independence of Latvia on 24 September 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 5 October 1992. On 25 June this year, Andris Razans was accredited as Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the Kingdom of Morocco, with residence in Copenhagen, Denmark. A group of 14 deputies for co-operation with the Moroccan Parliament has been operating in the 9th Saeima.

Latvia is represented in Morocco by three Honorary Consuls - in Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech. The interests of Morocco in Latvia have been represented since 2001 by Honorary Consul Valerijs Maligins, Chairman of the Board of a/s Olainfarm.
