On 3-4 July, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is holding a meeting for Latvia's Honorary Consuls with the aim of informing them about the opportunities to contribute to the promotion of exports and attraction of foreign investment, about topical consular issues as well as about the events commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Republic of Latvia.

The meeting will take place in the conference hall of the Riga Free Port Council and is to be opened by Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins. Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis will deliver a welcoming address.

On 4 July, the Honorary Consuls will go on a working visit to Valmiera and Cesis, where they will meet with Inesis Bokis, Chairman of the Valmiera City Council and with representatives from the Valmiera City Business Advisory Council. Visits to the companies Valmieras Piens and Valmieras Stikla Skiedra, and meetings with Gints Skenders, Chairman of the Cesis City Council, as well as with the Cesis business community are also scheduled.

In parallel with the meeting of Latvia's Honorary Consuls on 3 July their spouses will visit the Bulduri Horticultural Secondary School in order to acquaint themselves with the school and to take part in a floristry master class.

This will be the fourth conference of Latvia's Honorary Consuls. It will gather together 82 Honorary Consuls from 43 countries. They represent Latvia's interests in all regions of the world – both in Europe and America, in Asia, in Africa, in Australia and New Zealand. In total, Latvia has 130 Honorary Consuls.

Since 2002, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia has been holding meetings in Riga for Honorary Consuls every two years. The meetings have already become a tradition which allows Latvia to promote economic, cultural and consular co-operation, particularly in those countries where Latvia does not have diplomatic missions.

Honorary Consuls are appointed by the Foreign Minister, and they do not receive any remuneration from the state budget.
