On 18 August, Cheng Wenju, the new Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Latvia called on Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Ambassador extended to Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins greetings from the Foreign Minister of his country, Yang Jiechi.
Both sides then reviewed topical issues of bilateral relations and expressed their satisfaction with the exchange visits at the level of senior officials of the two countries. The parties expressed high regard for the meeting between President Valdis Zatlers and President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic of China during the Beijing Olympic Games. During the games, a meeting has also been scheduled for Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis with the Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao.
When discussing the prospects of bilateral relations, the Foreign Minister and the Ambassador agreed that there is potential for the development of economic co-operation in the sectors of transport and logistics. Foreign Minister Riekstins expressed the opinion that the Latvia-China Inter-governmental Committee is one of the key instruments for the expansion of co-operation in developing a transport corridor China-Latvia-Western Europe.
In the course of the conversation, the sides exchanged opinions about the issues of Tibet and the conflict in Georgia.
