29 Oct 2007

On 29 and 30 October in Riga, the Security Policy Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in association with experts from the Baltic states and Nordic countries is organizing a seminar for experts on strategic goods export control from Georgia.

The aim of the seminar is to facilitate a dialogue between experts in charge of export control of dual-use goods in Georgia and the Baltic and Nordic countries, to share Latvia's experience in the establishment of its strategic goods export control systems and to assist in the enhancement of strategic goods export control systems in Georgia.

During the seminar, the Georgian experts will be introduced to the legal base and practice with regard to export control of conventional weapons, dual use goods, WMD - related items and other strategic goods. Topics to be covered include also the requirements of the European Union, UN and international export control regimes in the field of export control. Special attention will be paid to the issues of brokering and electronic licensing. Seminar participants will have an opportunity to visit the customs office of the Riga export port as well as to familiarize themselves with the education programme for customs officers at the Riga Technical University and the opportunities for experience transfer in the field of customs officers training.

It is of vital importance for the countries to implement an effective export, import and transit control over strategic goods in order to eliminate the proliferation of military goods, nuclear weapons, chemical, biological and other weapons of mass destruction as well as their means of delivery. Successful international co-operation occupies a significant place in these efforts.
