Anniversary of international de iure recognition of Latvia to be marked in London and Ottawa

On 24 January 2007, the Latvian Embassy in London will host a special event dedicated to the anniversary of the international de iure recognition of Latvia. The Latvian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Indulis Berzins, and a Lecturer from the Centre for Slavic and East European Studies from the University College London, Dr Richard Butterwick, will speak on the bilateral relations between Latvia and the United Kingdom after the First World War and on the de iure recognition of Latvia. Among those present at the event will be the Estonian, Lithuanian and Polish ambassadors, representatives from the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office, diplomats from the neighbouring countries, and military attaches.

On 28 January, the Latvian Ambassador to Canada, Atis Sjanits, will meet with the children from the Ottawa Latvian Sunday school to tell them about this significant day for diplomats and Latvia at large. As part of the campaign Draudzigais aicinajums (Friendly Appeal), Mr Sjanits will also present the school with children's books by the Latvian authors and encyclopaedias about Latvia.
