Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks has expressed his deepest sympathy to the people of Indonesia by sending a letter of condolence to the Foreign Minister of Indonesia Dr. N. Hassan Wirajuda with regard to the earthquake in the city of Jogyakarta on 27 May 2006. According to the data provided by the Indonesian Social Affairs Ministry, the number of victims among the civil population was 5,800.
The Foreign Ministry, in conjunction with international organisations is currently working to choose the best option for rendering financial assistance to Indonesian people to help liquidate the consequences of the earthquake.
Yogyakarta is located on the southern coast of Java not far from the Marapi volcano which started erupting this month.
