On 26 May 2006, at the residence of the Latvian Ambassador to Ireland, Indulis Abelis, the Irish President Mary McAleese met with representatives of the local Latvian community. In her address, the Irish President welcomed the Latvians and thanked them for their contribution to the development of Ireland and expressed a high appreciation of their knowledge and skills. President Mary McAleese expressed the hope that Ireland would be a place where Latvians would feel good and welcome.
President Mary McAleese noted that Latvia and Ireland have a similar past experience, they both have gained freedom, joined the European Union and are currently forming a united Europe. This is a wonderful time for new opportunities and for both nations to become closer. Some Latvians will stay in Ireland, others will return to Latvia and contribute their experience and knowledge gained in Ireland. The Irish President wished success to Latvians and to the Latvian State.
The Irish President greeted all attendees and in friendly conversations learned the life stories of several families.
