On 16 June 2004, Normunds Popens, the Latvian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Iceland, presented accreditation letters to the President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.

During the discussion, both the Ambassador and the President noted the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, and recognized the necessity to continue expanding the cooperation in the areas of culture and education, which would allow the people of Latvia and Iceland to get to know each other better.

After receiving greetings and best wishes from the President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the President of Iceland recalled the deep impression left on him by Vike-Freiberga's address at the Women's Conference in Iceland in October of 1999.

Latvia's interests in Iceland are currently represented by the Latvian Embassy in Oslo, Norway. Normunds Popens is Latvia's Ambassador to Norway since 2000.
