Chairman of the U.S. Committee on NATO to visit Latvia [28 May 2001]

On 29 - 30 May 2001 the Chairman of the U.S. Committee on NATO Mr Bruce Jackson will be on a visit in Riga. The Committee promotes debate on the enlargement of NATO among various representatives of the U.S. Government, Congress and society. The visit of Mr Bruce Jackson is aimed at getting acquainted with Latvia's accomplishments in political and military as well as social and economic spheres on the way to NATO membership.

During the visit the Chairman of the Committee will meet with the President of Latvia Dr Vaira Vike-Freiberga, representatives of the Saeima factions, Minister of Defence Mr Girts Valdis Kristovskis and the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Maris Riekstins to discuss issues of Latvia's membership in NATO as well as will acquaint the Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet of Ministers with his vision of the consolidation of Europe and the NATO enlargement process within the framework of the session of Latvia's NATO Integration Council and the seminar of the non-governmental organisation LATO.
