On 25 June 2001 Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Indulis Berzins had a meeting with the Ambassador of the USA to Latvia Mr James H. Holmes, who had arrived in order to introduce the Minister with the results of the recent meeting of the U.S. President Mr George W. Bush and the President of Russia Mr Vladimir Putin. The Ambassador characterised the range of issues that were touched upon during the meeting in Slovenia.

The Minister and the U.S. Ambassador also talked over Latvia's movement towards the membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. The Ambassador noted that the forthcoming visit of the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Joseph W. Ralston to Riga on Thursday would be important for Latvia. The Alliance will soon have to make a decision concerning invitation of new candidate countries, therefore the impressions gained in Latvia and the evaluation by the General of Latvia's movement towards NATO will be of a particular importance.
