Latvia is satisfied over the decision of NATO to approve repeatedly the US embassy as NATO contact embassy in Latvia.

It is symbolic that the status of contact embassy is extended till 2002, when NATO countries will possibly pass a decision on further expansion of the Alliance.

Latvia has undertaken to achieve the highest possible practical readiness for the membership in the Alliance by 2002. Therefore, in the next two years, in co-operation with NATO contact embassy, increased attention will be paid to activities that help to raise Latvia's capacity as the future NATO member state to be a contributor to security in the Euroatlantic space.

The US has been a NATO contact country in Latvia for the last two years and the work performed during this period is the most clear evidence that Latvia may rely on significant support and assistance while preparing for NATO membership.
