During the meeting, the Presidents discussed bilateral relations between Latvia and Tajikistan and international issues. The Presidents stressed their mutual desire to strengthen relations between both countries, and also peace and stability at the regional and the global level. The Heads of States of Latvia and Tajikistan agreed to dedicate every effort to the further development of mutually beneficial economic cooperation and trade. As prospective areas for future cooperation were mentioned – chemical industry, information and communication technologies, construction and food industry, as well as textile manufacturing. During the discussions, the high standard of Latvia's transport infrastructure was acknowledged. In this regard the Heads of States noted that applying of Latvia's transport-transit potential is in accord with the concept of an East-West transit corridor. During the discussion, considerable attention was focused on the opportunities to intensify political dialogue between the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Tajikistan, intergovernmental and inter-parliamentary cooperation, as well as consultations regarding bilateral relations and international issues of importance to both sides. During the meeting, the Presidents discussed the significance of the legal framework between Latvia and Tajikistan, and expressed their support for the future development of legal commitments between both countries. Within the framework of visit intergovernmental agreements for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on incomes and on capital; Air Services Agreement were signed. The Protocol on Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries was signed. The Heads of States noted that the positions of Latvia and Tajikistan are close on important regional and international issues. Condemning acts of terror which threaten peace and security, the parties expressed support for the efforts of the international community in the fight against international terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and confirmed their readiness to strengthen their cooperation in this area. Support was likewise expressed for curbing the spread of drugs and organised crime, and the securing of peace in Afghanistan. The parties indicated that they will continue to be involved in ensuring stability and socio-economic rehabilitation in this country also in future. The parties emphasised that it was essential to develop cooperation within the framework of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and the Partnership for Peace, in order to promote the maintenance of security and stability throughout the world. Latvia expressed support for cooperation between Tajikistan and NATO within the framework of their Individual Partnership Programme. Both Heads of State praised the strategy adopted by the EU in Central Asia and acknowledged that the education initiative, the rule of law initiative, the dialogue on energy and water resources issues, as well as political dialogue at foreign minister level are strategies for much closer and more productive relations between the EU and the countries of Central Asia.
