On Saturday, August 16th, President Valdis Zatlers met with H.E. Konstantin Korkelia, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Georgia to the Republic of Latvia, and signed the book of sympathy.
During their meeting, Latvia's President offered a positive assessment of the provisional agreement to a cease-fire concluded between Georgia and Russia, expressing his hope that both sides will adhere to the provisions of the agreement and that the withdrawal of Russian armed forces from Georgian territory, stipulated in the agreement, will begin without further delay. President Zatlers noted that Latvia is working for the rapid deployment of international observers to oversee the implementation of the agreement.
The President of Latvia also expressed his condolences with regard to the victims of the military conflict and affirmed Latvia's willingness to continue to offer humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of the conflict.
