On April 23, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Elmar Maharram oglu Mammadyarov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan to Latvia.
The focus of the meeting was on the topical issues of bilateral relations of Latvia and Azerbaijan, economic cooperation and international matters. The officials paid special attention to the energy issues by also looking at their global and regional context; they discussed alterative solutions of energy resources, opportunities for promoting safe and stable energy-related partnerships, as well as impact of the energy issues on the global economic and political processes. Another focus of the meeting was discussion and comparison of experience of both countries concerning cooperation with Russia in the context of the global economic processes and energy problems.
The Latvian Prime Minister approved that Latvia is interested in closer bilateral economic cooperation in the priority areas of the Latvian economy; the situation in the financial and banking sector in Latvia and opportunities for cooperation with Azerbaijan in the financial sector were also discussed.
The Azerbaijan Foreign Minister expressed interest of Azerbaijan in using the Latvian port infrastructure for cargo and container transportation, as well as in cooperation in the area of education. At the end of the meeting the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan invited the Prime Minister to visit Azerbaijan.
