Since the restoration of Latvia's independence, the UK has provided considerable assistance in the formation of defence structures and development of regional cooperation of the Baltic States. In 1994, the Memorandum of Agreement on Cooperation was signed between the Latvian and British Ministries of Defence. As of 2000, the practical cooperation has been coordinated under a cooperation plan, which is agreed upon during bilateral staff talks. Cooperation between two countries takes place within NATO as well.

Both Latvia and the UK have accredited their military attachés.
