Javelin thrower Vasileskis takes silver for Latvia in Athens [29 Aug 2004]

Vadims Vasilevskis from Latvia won the silver medal in the javelin event at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, a stunning achievement for the young track and field athlete.

Vasilevskis' result was 84.95 meters, a personal record.

Andreas Thorkildsen, who by surprise took the gold medal for Norway, threw 86.50 meters. Sergei Makarov of Russia, one of the favourites in the javelin throwing competition, repeated his bronze in the Sydney Olympics with 84.84.

This was Latvia's fourth silver at the Games.
