Latvia assists in development of Moldavian Cynology Service [01 Nov 2005]

A delegation from the Moldavian Border Guard's Cynology Service is visiting Latvia from 31 October to 3 November 2005 to learn from Latvia's experience in reorganizing and developing their cynology service to conform to European standards.

During the visit, the Moldavian delegation will be shown the structure of the Latvian State Border Guard College's Cynology Service, operational planning and organization, relevant legislation, as well as the practical aspects of using the service's dogs in controlling and guarding the border. Over the past five years, Latvian cynologists from the Latvian State Border Guard have achieved outstanding results in international competitions for working dog handlers.

The Moldavian delegation is to participate in an international seminar organized by the Latvian State Border Guard College on development and cooperation prospects for EU member states' border guard cynology services. To gain some practical experience, the delegation will visit the Terehovo border crossing controlled by the State Border Guard's Ludza Board and the Opoli Border Guard Division.

The visit is taking place as part of the development cooperation project "Provision of Support to the Republic of Moldova for Capacity Building of the National Administration in the Areas of State Border Security, Border Guarding and Control, as well as Surveillance of Foreigners" implemented by the Latvian State Border Guard with the support of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
