Are you looking for Latvians in Brussels?

It isn't so easy. Latvians are among the smallest European communities in Brussels – up to 500 persons, in total. The roots of the Latvian community in Belgium come back to the end of the 1940-ties when hundreds of Latvians had found their refuge here at the end of the Second World War.

Since Latvia is the EU member state, the most common place to meet a Latvian is corridors of the European institutions. In 2005, "a medium Latvian" in Brussels is a young person, in his or her mid-twenties or thirties; well- educated with 2-3 years Brussels experience. Now about 300 Latvians are involved in the European institutions as civil servants, seconded experts and auxiliaries.

On Saturday mornings Latvian children in Brussels gather in the premises of our Representation for the Latvian School. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn in Latvian (one of two alive Baltic languages) and to meet friends.

Latvians are known as a singing nation. Just to remember the Singing Revolution in the Baltics in the beginning of the 1990-ties or the National Song Festival that takes place every four years. Since October 2004 the Brussels Latvian Choir gathers regularly for singing together. Do not miss their next concert!
