On Wednesday, October 29, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States of America. During the meeting, M. Chertoff affirmed that Latvia has successfully concluded talks on joining the US Visa Waiver Program. The citizens of Latvia will be able to travel to the USA for business and tourism without a visa from November 17 this year.

On Tuesday, October 28, President Valdis Zatlers met with the head of the Order of Malta, His Most Eminent Highness Fra' Matthew Festing, Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, Most Humble Guardian of the Poor of Jesus Christ, who is visiting Latvia from October 27 until October 31 at the invitation of former President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. This is the first highest-level diplomatic event involving Latvia and the Order of Malta.
This week, presidents of Georgia, Ukraine and of the Baltic states take part in the Riga Conference 2008 (LATO) [28 Oct 2008]
From 31 October to 2 November in the Melngalvju Nams (Blackheads House), the Riga Conference Europe Whole and Free: 90 years in the making will take place and bring together heads of states, the world's leading academics, politicians, representatives from non-governmental organizations, commentators, and journalists to review significant challenges to the Transatlantic community in the 21st century.
