Major Tasks and Activities of Mission

Latvia is represented in the United Nations in New York since 17 September 1991. The task of the delegation of Latvia is to represent the interests of Latvia in the UN General Assembly and 6 major commissions (Disarmament Commission, Economic and Financial Commission, Commission on Human Rights, Special Political and Decolonisation Commission, Administrative and Budgetary Commission, International Law Commission) as well as co-operate with the delegations of other 190 member states on the issues discussed in UN in New York.

The delegation of Latvia follows the work of the UN Security Council, Economic and Social Council and other structures as well as participates in the discussion about the reform of UN. Since accession of Latvia to the European Union, the delegation of Latvia participates in the co-ordination meetings of the EU member states to elaborate a joint position on the topical UN issues. Due to the regional division of UN the delegation of Latvia works also in the group of Eastern European countries that focuses on reaching an agreement about the nominees of the group for various UN structures and posts.

On behalf of the government of the Republic of Latvia the mission of Latvia to UN in New York establishes diplomatic relations with other countries, signs international agreements (conventions), ensures that the international agreements Latvia has acceded to and national reports about compliance with international conventions and various UN resolutions are deposited with UN.

The mission organises the participation of high-ranking officials of Latvia in the opening of the annual session of the General Assembly and visits of the parliamentary and government officials to UN in New York.
