Latvian Foreign Ministry announces Latvia's candidacy for UN Human Rights Council 

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced Latvia's candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council. The Council elections will be held on 9 May 2006. 47 seats in the Human Rights Council will be distributed among regional groups. The Eastern European group, to which Latvia has applied, will hold six seats, Africa – 13 seats, Asia – 13 seats, Latin American and Caribbean states – eight seats, and the Western countries, including the United States and Canada – seven seats.
