UNDP OFFICE
In December 2005 UN Development Programme (UNDP) ceased to operate in Latvia. Since the establishment of UNDP Country Office in Latvia in 1992 it has helped Latvia to access the intellectual and financial resources in the period of transition to promote sustainable human development.
UNDP assisted with shaping and strengthening of the public administration system and development of civil society. The most significant input of UNDP is to be found in the fields of public integration, human rights, prevention of HIV/AIDS and environmental protection. UNDP devoted particular attention to reduction of poverty. UNDP supported the establishment of the Latvian National Human Rights Office, Latvian Language State Support Agency and Training Centre for Judges. In the past years UNDP helped to strengthen the systems for absorption of EU Structural Funds.
In total UNDP in Latvia has co-ordinated and implemented more than 70 projects in 11 spheres in co-operation with 117 Latvian partners. Throughout the years UNDP in Latvia has attracted to the development purpose more than 22,7 million US dollars from its own budget, donors and funds of international organisations.
Upon closure of UNDP Country Office in Latvia the implementation of 9 environmental projects financially supported by the Global Environment Fund will continue.
Since 1993 the offices of UNDP, International Monetary Fund and World Bank were present in Latvia as well as the projects of UN AIDS programme, UN Population Fund and UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
